History of Sikkim

The name Sikkim was originated from two Limbu words su-him which derives to new home. Lepcha and Bhutia is the two oldest inhabitants of these regions. Takin of history, Sikkim was an independent kingdom that occupied by Nepal in the 18t century after series of wars between Bhutan and Nepal.  Later on the kingdom was annexed from the Nepal by British East India Company in the year 1816. The kingdom was under the rule of Namgyal Dynasty till 1975, after which the region became as the 22nd state of India. Sikkim is now one of the prominent parts of India and is one of the eight union territories of India.

The people of Sikkim call themselves as Sikkimese and are known for their vibrant lifestyle, rich culture and old-age traditions making it one of the most unique states of India.
