The name Sikkim was originated from two Limbu words su-him which derives to new home. Lepcha and Bhutia is the two oldest inhabitants of these regions. Takin of history, Sikkim was an independent kingdom that occupied by Nepal in the 18t century after series of wars between Bhutan and Nepal. Later on the kingdom was annexed from the Nepal by British East India Company in the year 1816. The kingdom was under the rule of Namgyal Dynasty till 1975, after which the region became as the 22nd state of India. Sikkim is now one of the prominent parts of India and is one of the eight union territories of India.
The people of Sikkim call themselves as Sikkimese and are known for their vibrant lifestyle, rich culture and old-age traditions making it one of the most unique states of India. Being the least populated state of India, the land of Sikkim is home to more than 20 tribes and communities that together lives happily. Music and dance forms are the major part of people lives which are mostly seen on the eve of festivals and religious occasions. Although English is the official language of the state, Nepali and Sikkimese is the most spoken language of the state.
